Awesome ABCs
Grades: PreK - 2
The focus of this project is for you to illustrate and write your own ABC book. First, you need to take a look at several good books that illustrate the alphabet. Next you can brainstorm and choose a theme—such as animals or sports—for your own book. Then make the book! Use your artistic ability to illustrate each letter with something whose name begins with that letter, and then you may write about your pictures.
Fad or Fortune
Grades: 3 - 9
This project explores collecting and the many items people collect. You will also learn about the collectibles that seem to be fads, and the inventors and designers who came up with them. Also, find out how people display their collectibles. For a final project, you can organize a way for the students in your school to learn about collectibles by setting up a Share Fair for those who have collections, or you can poll several people about their collections to predict which ones will increase in value over the next three decades.
Creating a Comic
Grades: 3 - 9
In this project you will learn why comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels are popular with many readers. As you work on this project, you will use a notebook to take notes and make sketches. The main product is your own six-panel comic strip. You will use your imagination to create an interesting character, write a story with a main idea for each square, and then make a storyboard for your rough draft. Then use your storyboard to create the final draft of your comic, including plenty of detail. Finally, finish it with ink for a black and white comic, or add color. You can also create a complete comic book.
Historical Newspper
Grades: 6 - 12
While doing this project, you will research a historical event that occurred in the mid- to late 1900's. Then examine articles in local and national newspapers to familiarize yourself with ways in which journalistic information is presented in print. For a product, create a newspaper that includes articles about the event you studied and about its time period, such as a lead story, a movie review, a sports story, and so on. Then edit, lay out, print, and distribute your newspaper.
