Renewable Resources and Recycling
Grades: PreK - 2
In this project, you will learn about renewable resources and about materials that can be recycled. Find out what you can do to make our planet a better place to live through renewing and recycling. Then you can either start a recycling program at home or school, plant a tree, or create a compost pile. Once you have completed your project, you might want to enter one of the contests offered.
Write Your Own Haiku
Grades: K - 5
A haiku is a short poem, usually just three lines long. Read some examples and then try writing your own haiku. As a final product, put together a book of your own haiku poetry or your favorite haiku by other poets. Consider illustrating your book, and submitting your original poetry for publication.
Fad or Fortune
Grades: 3 - 9
This project explores collecting and the many items people collect. You will also learn about the collectibles that seem to be fads, and the inventors and designers who came up with them. Also, find out how people display their collectibles. For a final project, you can organize a way for the students in your school to learn about collectibles by setting up a Share Fair for those who have collections, or you can poll several people about their collections to predict which ones will increase in value over the next three decades.
Literary Nonfiction
Grades: 6 - 9
In this project, you will learn how to conduct research. First, choose a subject area for research and narrow your focus to a topic within that area. Next, formulate a research question and find sources that offer the best relevant information. As you begin your reading, take good notes, organize your information, and start a bibliography to document your sources. For your final product, use your research to resolve the conflict in a short story or graphic novel. You can enter your final product in a contest.
Writing to Make Life Meaningful
Grades: 10 - 12
To gain fresh insight into events from your life, share them with others in writing. First, read one of the most beautifully written journals in the world, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Then choose an event from your own life and make it the subject of a narrative essay. You may want to write several essays and bind them, or publish them in your school or local newspaper. You can also enter an essay in a competition.
Each week, we will send you teaching suggestions and a few examples of our best and most popular resources.
